5 out of the box ways to motivate employees

Motivated employees are more productive, efficient and give better results. However, according to SHRM Employee Job Satisfaction and Engagement survey, more than 30 percent of employees don’t put all of their efforts into work. This means that companies need to do more in order to keep their workers stimulated. If you are looking for ways to motivate your employees and help them improve the quality of their work, here are some unusual, out-of-the-box ideas you may find useful.

1. Offer attractive perks

People want to work for companies who take care of their employees.  Whether you offer an onsite gym or playroom filled with stress relievers in the form of games, toys and gadgets, paid maternity and paternity leave, great Christmas bonuses or more robust healthcare options, your employees will feel more appreciated and feel the need to take better care of the company who looks after them. In fact, in areas where there is a high demand for the best talent, companies rely on their perks to attract the best candidates. One of the companies that offer the best perks is Airbnb, which gives employees $2,000 a year to travel and stay at an Airbnb listing wherever they want in the world.

2. Let them know how their work affects others

It is easy for employees to get lost in their everyday tasks and forget that their work is affecting others. One of the best ways to keep your employees motivated and to give them a boost in morale and purpose is to remind them that their work matters and that they are making a difference in other people’s lives. Of course, customer reviews are always an excellent motivator, but only a few employees come face-to-face with customers or clients. Therefore, try to find a way to share customer feedback with all of your employees. For example, you can pin a card with feedback to the board when a team or member of staff is commended, display positive feedback on plasma-screen TV, share good customer feedback at the end of Monday morning meeting or come up with something completely new and different.

3. Empower your employees

When they are stuck in a rut employees tend to lose focus and do not feel motivated to reach higher. Therefore, give them more responsibilities every now and then, help them set work priorities and goals and empower them to take control of their professional careers. More engaged employees tend to be more motivated. However, use this strategy only if there is a real possibility for them to ascend within the company.

4. Organise diversity celebrations

These celebrations encourage your employees to learn more about their co-workers, which builds deeper bonds that lead to higher motivation levels. However, organising these events on a company level might not be the option. In addition, some employees might feel uncomfortable making themselves the centre of attention for such occasions.  Instead, organise diversity celebrations within teams and encourage team members to plan an out-of-work activity that relates to them and then engage in it with the rest of the team. This way employees from different backgrounds can more easily ingratiate themselves into the team, which will make them more motivated to do better at work.

5. Turn tasks into games

Regardless of one’s age, play is always a positive motivator. Therefore, if you are looking for a way to motivate your employees, try turning most of their tasks into a game. For example, you can give badges to the most productive employees and award monthly trophies for outstanding performances.  If you want to put your own personal touch on this, you can design the trophies and badges yourself and award them in an elaborate ceremony.

There are so many original ways you can motivate your employees and encourage a positive workplace culture. Either it can be rewarding with glass trophy award or connecting each with fun games. Thinking out-of-the-box, introducing fun into your work environment and loosening of professionalism can help you stimulate your people to produce better results. Follow these guidelines or find new and unique ways to bring your employees together, help them to ingratiate themselves into a team and let them know they are appreciated.
