Can cannabis impact student academic performance?

When it comes to cannabis use and the academic performance of students, it is very important for school administrators, teachers and parents to take into consideration the impact of cannabis use on students’ education.

Cannabis is a plant that produces strong psychedelic components. However, there are strains of cannabis that are only harvested for their health and medicinal value. When it comes to education, do different strains of marijuana produce different results in children’s performance? To learn more about different strains of marijuana, we suggest that you should visit here.

Schools are primarily concerned with the academic success of their student success. However, various studies have shown that student retention, and achievement have shown that the greater the students use cannabis, the greater the chances of them skipping classes, and getting lower GPAs. Studies have also revealed that students who take cannabis often have enrollment gaps and are not able to graduate on time.

In one study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence, a scientific journal for drug addiction and mental health revealed that college students who smoke weed are more likely to have low GPAs, increased chances of dropping out, and increased likelihood of not graduating on time.

Given the results of various peered-reviewed studies published, should schools ban cannabis?

Summarizing the results of various studies, it is very easy for anyone to conclude that cannabis will only have negative effects on students’ school performance. However, neurologists and paediatricians cautioned people from making a hasty conclusion. If anything, they encourage everyone to freely discuss this topic so people can make intelligent decisions based on facts.

Many doctors and specialists explain that different combinations of CBD and THC are necessary for the treatment of certain diseases to be effective. As such, banning of all cannabis and cannabis-derived products can seriously result in the deprivation of much-needed help for children who require medical cannabis for treatment. For instance, children with seizures are being given cannabis-based products and may even need to receive multiple doses of CBD oil throughout the day. Allowing children with such conditions to receive their daily dose of cannabis could result in better academic performance.

Due to the paradoxical effects of medications on children, doctors have explained that medical cannabis does not result in sleepiness among children. In most instances, medical cannabis for children is not from the strains of cannabis with significant THC content which may result in a happy high. Furthermore, banning cannabis-based medicines may result in parents resorting to illegal means to provide cannabis to their community. This means that the medications that the children receive may have not passed important health and safety standards. A good example of this was the study conducted by researchers at the University of California-Davis which reported that lethal bacteria and mould are found on samples of cannabis found in certain areas of California.

What schools should do is find the appropriate balance between allowing and regulating cannabis use on the school premises. Cannabis is an integral component in many medications for children and young adults and banning them from schools can destroy the future of many people.
