In the early days, letters were the only means of long-distance communication. Sealed in an envelope it would take days for it to reach the recipient, not to mention the number of intermediaries that would be involved in the process. With the advent of telephones and the Internet, long-distance communication has been easier than ever. In spite of that, letters have not gone obsolete. Be it official letters or postcards sent in beautiful a5 envelopes this form of communication cannot truly die. It has its place well secured in society.

Importance of envelopes

Letters and envelopes are two inseparable entities. An envelope does not protect what is inside but also gives it an outlook to suit the nature of the content. The usage of envelopes is not only limited to letters but also greetings cards, confidential documents and even cash. Thus, it is evident that envelopes are as important as their content. Getting an envelope

As mentioned earlier, envelopes are used to contain a variety of things. Therefore, it is necessary that envelopes too come in different forms and sizes. Every type of envelope has its own purpose which is why one should choose the one that is appropriate. Envelopes vary in the following ways:

  • Sizes- Envelopes come in a wide variety of sizes to fit objects of both small and large sizes. Some of the commonly available sizes are A3, A3+, A4, A4+ A5, A5+, A6, C4, C6 and DL. An envelope should neither be too big nor too small for the object it contains. Imagine how odd it would look to put passport-size photographs in a5 envelopes.
  • Shapes- The commonly seen envelopes are rectangular in shape. These usually contain formal and semi-formal letters. These are usually not very big. Next are the square-shaped or nearly square-shaped ones. These usually contain greeting cards and postcards. These are mostly informally used. Some are so large that can fit in large documents and booklets. These usually open from the side instead of the top.
  • Material used- Basic envelopes are made of plain paper. Then there are envelopes made of cellophane and are somewhat transparent. There are plastic envelopes which are also transparent but are usually sturdier. Cardboard envelopes and metallic envelopes are also there, though used infrequently as compared to the ones mentioned above.
  • Colour and design-Formal and official letters usually come in plain white rectangular envelopes. These may be with or without and window. Some envelopes are made of coloured paper and are used for informal use. The same goes for the metallic envelopes with their glossy colourful appearance. Some envelopes have intricate designs or art drawn upon them to make them more suited for a particular use such as to contain birthday cards and Christmas cards.

Conclusion

The Internet and telecommunication services have not been able to eradicate postal services. This form of communication has also taken a modern turn. Now you get envelopes of various designs and colours that are made of materials that never existed in the past.
