Engineering the Future group has recently warned that there is likely to be a skills shortage in the engineering sector. A large proportion of UK engineers are nearing retirement age without enough young people to fill the positions left behind.

The report claims that the negative perception of the engineering sector is putting many young people off manufacturing careers. It adds that the negative reputation surrounding courses are another factor continuing to the lack of interest. The group has stressed the importance of acting swiftly, as those technical staff with 30 plus years under their belt are nearing retirement in vast numbers.

Engineering the Future has stated: ‘There are a lot of misconceptions about manufacturing among young people: that it is badly paid, has high redundancy rates and is dirty, physically demanding work . . . The lack of career advice and the national curriculum losing modules in design and technology at secondary level will have a negative impact on future manufacturing.’ (BBC News, 7th May 2014)
