Many British citizens are considering starting a business in Spain, with the intention of leaving the UK after Brexit. What is the reason for this? Brexit is the name given to the political process that involved the UK leaving the European Union, thus abandoning their status as a member of said political community. The European Union (EU) is an international political community that was established to integrate the various states of Europe.

One of the most visible consequences of Brexit is institutional, since the 73 British MEPs will no longer be members of the European Parliament. Another similar repercussion is that the British Prime Minister will no longer be able to attend summits for heads of state or governments; he will have to give up his role, as will the judge of the General Court of the European Union.

Consequences of Brexit

The United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union has created obstacles to business and to the different types of cross-border trade, obstacles that didn’t exist before Brexit was finalised on 1 January 2021. In this sense, it is accurate to say that the consequences for public administrations, companies and citizens were inevitable, even with the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom as established by the European Commission.

The commission also provides guidance to the governments of member states by organising industry-specific technical seminars to help improve the application of preparation measures, particularly with regard to border controls for goods and people.

With regard to issues related to the application of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom, the European Commission clarifies that organisations, companies and citizens may establish continuous contact through the Europe Direct information service.
