If you’ve ever seen gaming laptops advertised while looking for a new laptop, you may have wondered what makes them different. At first glance, it looks like it’s just a fancy way of marketing regular laptops, but gaming laptops are actually quite different. In fact, if you want amazing graphics and a lot of power, a gaming laptop might be exactly what you need.

Plenty of creative minds use gaming laptops for creative purposes, including video editors and graphic designers. There is a massive overlap between gaming hardware and creative work needs, which makes gaming laptops the go-to for many creative professionals. For instance, they’re often preferred by photographers, graphic designers, and video editors.

You may not be into gaming, but if you’re a creative professional, here are all the best reasons to consider buying a gaming laptop over other options.

1. Gaming laptops can handle demanding software

When working in applications that demand a lot of memory, a computer that can’t handle it will just crash the program or cause it to freeze, requiring you to force quit. If you’re lucky, you can install more RAM, but not all laptops have that option. If you’re lucky enough to be able to get more RAM, you’ll be without a laptop while it’s being upgraded.

A gaming laptop will come with enough RAM already installed, typically 16 GB, and may even be expandable further. In fact, some gaming laptops come with all the RAM you need to run several resource-intensive applications at the same time. For example, imagine being able to run Photoshop and Illustrator, or Photoshop and Premiere Pro at the same time, flawlessly. That can be a reality with the right laptop.

The best gaming laptops also have immense processing power, and come with at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor. If you can afford to pay more, the Intel Core i7, i9, or AMD Ryzen 7 will make your experience even better.

2. You’ll get a better graphics card

If you work in Photoshop, edit video, or render 3D models, the graphics processing unit (GPU) in your laptop matters. The GPU is what accelerates rendering, allows for real-time playback, and enhances the overall performance of editing. If your graphics card isn’t powerful enough, you won’t have a smooth experience while editing video, which will translate to imperfections in your end result.

A high-quality graphics card will make your visuals display smoothly rather than choppy. If you’re a creative professional, whether or not a laptop has a good graphics card is a deal-breaker. That’s why gaming laptops are a good choice – they come with amazing graphics cards so there’s no need to try to upgrade on your own.

3. Hard drives are fast

There is a huge difference between traditional magnetic hard drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs). While the storage capacity can be the same, the mechanics and speed differ greatly. For example, traditional hard drives are much slower than solid state drives, so gaming laptops typically come with SSDs to facilitate fast file access.

4. The display will be better

Most laptops come with basic displays that don’t really make colors vibrant. Gaming laptops, on the other hand, come with displays that have better color accuracy and a higher resolution, like 1080p and 4k displays.

For photographers and graphic designers, having a high-resolution display is crucial. Being able to see RGB colors accurately will greatly enhance your work.

5. The screen will be bigger

Many gaming laptops come with a 15” or 17” screen by default, which is what you need for creative work. Small screens may be the standard today, but they don’t really let you see the big picture. On a 13” screen, you’ll have to zoom in to see details and if you’re working in Photoshop, that can be a big pain.

6. You can get fun features

Gamers want cool laptops, and many of them come with fun features, like colorful backlit keyboards, glow-in-the-dark keys, and more. One of the most popular features is an RGB keyboard, which lights up the keyboard according to your specified color profile. You can even make certain keys light up in different colors. It’s not going to help you with your work, but it will make using your laptop fun.

Power matters

When you have creative work to get done, you need computing power and amazing visuals. A gaming laptop can satisfy both of these needs without forcing you to upgrade individual components. If you’re looking for a new laptop, consider a gaming laptop to stay productive in your creative flow.
