Why is your workforce lacking productivity

Productivity is demanded, required and expected in every field of work. While money is a crucial motivating factor, it isn’t the sole driving force. For some people, productivity is part of their inherent nature, but that’s not enough. To boost your workplace productivity, you have to cultivate an encouraging and supportive work environment.

Have you noticed a dip in your employees’ productivity? In this post, we are sharing some reasons for declining workforce productivity and subsequent solutions for improvement.

  1. Lack of Belongingness

Starting a new job can very much feel like going to a new high school. Your job can offer the highest level of gratification, but the people who surround you also play a crucial role in your work life.

It’s the management’s responsibility to make the employees feel welcomed. Everyone should be given a more or less even playing field when it comes to expressing their opinions. Employing a diverse workforce is also necessary to promote cultural belongingness.

You have to show care for employees, instead of making it a mere transactional relationship.

  • Misaligned company and personal goals

Your business is nothing without your employees. Before hiring employees, you should clearly communicate your company’s goals and values. An employee should be able to align his/her personal goals with the company’s values. They should be able to see the work they do is significant and contributes to the company’s success.

Therefore, you need to take active measures to remind your employees that their vision, goals and values are respected by the company.

  • Inadequate Amenities

Your workplace doesn’t have to be the epitome of hospitality, but it’s essential to equip it with essential amenities. For instance, a cafe or a common room gives employees a place to enjoy their breaks and recharge for work. Installing vending machines, coffee machines and water coolers also encourage productivity.

  • Frequent meetings

If your organisation calls a meeting for every single trivial thing, it’s time to reconsider this policy. Conducting frequent meeting has a direct impact on employees’ productivity. It breaks the rhythm of work and costs the company precious time. Instead, make meetings a monthly or weekly occasion. Other than that you can reserve meetings for emergencies.

  • Toxic work environment

How employees are treated at work has an impact on their psyche. This is why it is important to keep workplace behaviour in check. You cannot take any form of bullying lightly. Strict and immediate action should be taken to discourage inappropriate workplace behaviour. Your employees should feel physically and mentally safe.

  • Uncomfortable office space

You can implement fair policies and share encouraging words, but sometimes words ain’t enough. The reason for declining productivity could be your office space itself.

Right from lighting, cleanliness, temperature to ergonomic furniture, all these factors influence employee productivity. If you want your employees to give their best, you have to give them the right environment to do so.

  • Underappreciation

Failure to recognise your employees for their accomplishment has a direct effect on their productivity. Why would anyone volunteer to make additional efforts if it’s never appreciated?

Make an effort to acknowledge and reward the efforts of your employees. This motivates them, which subsequently improves their productivity.

  • Poor planning

Poor planning and management are one of the leading reasons for lack of productivity. Employees should have a clear sense of direction when it comes to handling a task. Strong leadership is key for proper planning. A good leader should be able to guide their team and maximise their productivity.

  •  Under-delegation

Under-delegation riddles employees with inconsequential tasks that add no value to their work. Instead of loading your employees with tasks out of their repertoire, focus on suitable delegation.

  1. Excess e-mailing

Coming to work and finding a plethora of unread email is quite overwhelming. While the intention is mostly good, too much emailing drains productivity. It becomes increasingly difficult to prioritise tasks with an overflowing inbox.

Employees should be encouraged to email for important communications. For everything else, they should use an instant messaging service.

We hope this post helps you revisit certain practices and policies and improve your organisation’s productivity.
