Workforce planning is the process of planning for the future labour needs of a business. An analysis will show the numbers, skills and locations of people needed. Recruitment and training can then be focused on meeting those needs. The oil and gas industry is facing a shortage of skilled people due to a number of factors so effective workforce planning is essential. Firstly, an ageing workforce means many senior experts in the industry are approaching retirement. In addition, in the UK there is a shortage of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM subjects) graduates so demand for these students is high. This skills shortage is high on the industry’s agenda in the UK. For example, Prof John Perkins, chief scientific adviser at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has issued a call to action to government, industry and educators to help inspire future engineering talent and address skills shortages. (BBC, 4th November 2013)
