Hobbies from home that can help improve your finances

After a whirlwind year of working from home and furlough schemes, most of us will have had time to pick up a new hobby or two, but which ones can help you generate money from home? Here are four at-home hobbies that you can turn into a business.

Photography

Photography has become a popular profession in the last 20 years, due to more events and activities taking place. Whether you’re into nature photography, high fashion, or street photography, there’s money to be made.

If you feel confident enough with your photography skills and have a relevant DBS certificate, you can become a wedding or new-born photographer. As activities slowly start to re-emerge and take shape again, more people will be looking for events photographers to capture the moment. Just make sure you have the right insurance beforehand.

Woodwork and carpentry

This ancient form of construction has recently made a resurgence as people continue to search for unique and natural home décor. With a large push to upcycle and reuse old products, more and more are turning to carpentry in efforts to save their old well-loved furniture.

If you have the type of woodworking skills that you can repair and build furniture with, you can easily set up your own crafting business and draw in some customers with your unusual and wonderful woodwork ideas. Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary tools including hand saws and files.

Blogging

If you have a natural talent for writing, then blogging could be a good way to make some extra money. The best thing about blogs is that they don’t have to be about anything in particular, as there’s so many different ones already out there.

The most popular blogs online are usually related to travel, cooking, childcare and having a family, and how to save money. You might even be able to test and keep some products in exchange for a review on your blog once it gains enough traction.

Baking

With many of us staying at home over the last year, it’s been harder to get a hold of freshly baked sweet treats. If you’re a talented baker and have some time on your hands, try creating a selection of baked goods for your neighbourhood to enjoy and charging a small price for them.

If this becomes popular, you could even start shipping your products nation-wide via a courier and set up your own online store for customers to place their orders through.
