Dewalt DWS779 and DWS780 models

To any uninformed mitre saw user, the Dewalt DWS779 and DWS780 could prove to be headscratchers. Why bother assigning two different model names for practically the same product?

This question will probably be the first to enter your mind, especially once you give both models a passing glance.

The basic features also seem the same so why did Dewalt bother to release two separate models? Well, as it turns out, you have to look closer at the two to see that the differences are not as subtle as they seem.

The Defining Feature of the DWS780

With almost close to identical specs, we have to put the spotlight on the latter DWS780 model to really pinpoint the main difference.

This particular model, once you start looking at the components of the two, actually has an XPS Cutline positioning feature that the DWS779 lacks.

The feature functions as a guiding LED light that many users, pros and casual DIYers alike, love to have because it boosts the accuracy of their cuts and general productivity.

The sole addition of the LED light already makes the DWS780 relatively more expensive; it’s not just a marginal difference in pricing.

As far as differences in features are concerned, the said blade alignment marking light is the only major factor that sets the DWS779 apart from the DWS780. That’s not to say that the light is the only one that you should consider.

Do take note, too, that the DWS779 is actually compatible with the said guiding light as well. If you are already an owner of the DWS779, you can just order the LED light attachment for your unit, and it will pretty much pass as a veritable copy of the DWS780.

A Few More Facts that Make the DWS779 and DWS780 Totally Unique from Each Other

  • Though both integrate 15-amp motors with 3,800 RPM, you actually can’t use the DWS779’s motor as a replacement for DWS780 units, and vice versa. The DWS780’s motor mount does not fit the DWS779’s motor. It remains a matter of debate whether both models have the motor quality.
  • Based on Amazon user reviews, the majority of actual buyers of the DWS780 actually praise it for its safety features. The same can’t be said for the DWS779; although, it’s actually considered more ergonomic. That latter fact can be debated, though, as both models practically have the same design and cutting capacity, to cite a few.
  • Many experienced users of both models highly recommend the DWS779 to most users as the DWS780’s guiding LED light appears to simply be targeting a specific demographic (i.e. professionals) with its unique feature.
