How to get started in a new profession

The global trend to find your dream profession has covered all areas. Someone leaves for a new speciality, for example, a Python freelance developer, someone is looking for independence in creativity and is tired of working for someone.

But unfortunately, most of those who decide to make drastic changes in their professional lives are disappointed. It is not surprising, because from an experienced specialist you become a beginner again, and at the start, the salary is lower and there is still no escape from work routine. Therefore, you must start your path in a new profession correctly after weighing all the pros and cons. Experienced recruiters give a few tips that will help facilitate the transition from one field of activity to another.

Ensure a safe transition

There are several steps in this general advice. Each of them must be passed so that the very fact of switching to a new speciality does not become a disappointment.

Step 1: Understand your company’s needs

For example, you work in the sales department of an advertising company, and you know that the design department is about to expand. If creating bright designs is your dream, this is a chance not to be missed. First, you are aware of market trends and know what customers like. Secondly, the company knows you well, your strengths and capabilities. Go to courses, consult with fellow specialists, and ask them to help deal with the difficulties. Such a transition will be as smooth and comfortable as possible. It applies to any company, even if your dream is to become a Python developer (https://anywhere.epam.com/en/python-developer-job-description), but for now, you are a sales manager.

Step 2: Don’t rush to quit

Education in different formats is a prerequisite for mastering a new profession. But there is no need to rush to quit your job. Courses and webinars can be taken after work. If the schedule does not allow you to study thoroughly, take a vacation. Firstly, you can pay for training and cover all your expenses while working. Secondly, there will be no feeling of panic when the first time it is not possible to solve new tasks (and everyone goes through this).

Find a mentor

A prerequisite for the transition to a new sphere is immersion in solving professional problems and knowledge of the intricacies of specialities. Unfortunately, in so many courses, you will be taught to use the tools and techniques as instructed, and the mentor will tell you what additional features they have. It is good if the teacher is one of the teachers from the courses where you were trained. Seeing your passion for the profession, they will help with the material and advice about employment.

Find high-quality courses

Many have to save money to get a good education. Never rely only on courses, especially those that promise to turn you into an extraordinary specialist from scratch in 3 months. Remember, you can get basic knowledge on your own, but you can systematize and deepen it with the help of training. So that the money is not wasted, consult with former students of the courses, and read the reviews. And yet, good workshops are not cheap.

It helps if you always have plan B”. You must understand that there is no guarantee that you will become an outstanding specialist in a new profession.

In the meantime, don’t despair! If the former profession does not bring pleasure, you need to persevere until you find one that does.
