Definition of Essays

Essays are circulated in high school, college and university. You may even need to write an essay in the business world. Scientists define an essay as a short text that expresses information and the writer’s opinion.

The founder of the essay genre was the French writer, philosopher Michel Montaigne. In 1580, Montaigne wrote an essay in which he shared his reflections on the fate of society and man.

An essay is an independent creative writing work. In the form of an essay, it is usually reasoning, reflection. Therefore it uses a question-answer form of presentation, interrogative sentences, rows of homogeneous members, introductory words, a parallel way of connecting sentences in the text.

Purpose of the Essay

The purpose of the essay is to develop independent creative thinking skills and write out your thoughts. Writing an essay is extremely useful because it allows the author: to learn to clearly, competently formulate thoughts, structure information, use the main categories of analysis, distinguish causal relationships, illustrate concepts with relevant examples, justify their conclusions and master the scientific style of speech.

Essay Structure

First of all, you must adhere to a certain structure of the essay. This is necessary because teachers evaluate adherence to the correct format, and it will also help you navigate faster and save time writing an article. The structure of your utterance includes:

  1. Introduction.
  2. Body.
  3. Conclusion.

Essay writing is built not only on the correct creation of sections. Here’s a step-by-step essay writing guide to help you get an A+.

Step 1 – Selecting a Topic

Choosing a topic is an important step. It is difficult to make arguments on topics that you do not know anything about. Therefore, we recommend choosing a topic based on your knowledge, interests, and discipline. If you have no ideas, check with your teacher, and he may suggest good essay topics for you. Another option is to look at sample essays. Many good ideas have accumulated for all the years that the essay has existed – use them for inspiration, but do not copy.

Step 2 – Creating a Plan

Writing an essay without a plan is like running on water. However, a plan will help you structure your paragraphs correctly to not miss out on anything important. First, study authoritative sources in advance to understand what arguments you will use in your essay. Then, based on this data, create a structure. For example:

  1. Introduction – an acquaintance of the reader with the topic.
  2. 1 paragraph of the body – the book is a source of inspiration.
  3. 2 paragraph of the body – a book is a friend.
  4. 3 paragraph of the body – the book helps to define life goals.
  5. Conclusion – summarizing the evidence and calling for action.

Step 3 – Writing an Introduction

Introduction – here, you must explain why the topic is essential and based on your chosen criteria. At this stage, it is necessary to formulate the question to find the answer correctly. The introduction volume is two or five sentences or 10% of the total volume of the article.

In the introduction, you can write a phrase to refute or confirm. The thesis statement is the main idea of the article. The main requirements of the thesis are:

  1. Conciseness – try to write your thoughts in 1-2 sentences.
  2. Strict adherence to the topic – the thesis should reflect the essence of the topic.
  3. Correct wording – the thesis can be proved or refuted based on facts. If your idea cannot be refuted or proved, this is not a thesis but a statement of fact.

In the introduction, it is essential to use statistics, quotes, and aphorisms. This approach will help you gain the reader’s attention. An example of a successful introduction on the topic “Why you should read books:”

The book can be considered one of the greatest inventions of humanity. In the past, people wrote down essential ideas and various discoveries in books, so I can say that the book is an excellent source of information. The Egyptians wrote the very first book about 5000 years ago. A book is not just a collection of pages – the book is an excellent conversationalist, a medicine for sadness, faith in the best. To prove this, I turned directly to the literature and, for these reasons, chose a topic.

Step 4 – Writing a Body

The central part can consist of several paragraphs in which you answer the question posed. One section contains thesis, proof or arguments, examples, mini conclusion, which is partly the answer to the question. In the central part, you need to express your point of view and argue for it.

The argument is the facts to support the thesis. You will need to provide at least two arguments, which should be relevant and:

  1. Similar to each other – not contradicting the thesis.
  2. Original Рdoes not contain typical clich̩d phrases.
  3. Suggest the development of thought.
  4. To talk about your erudition – arguments-statements of famous people, historical situations.

In the body, you can also lead examples – at least two. It is important to remember that one example should relate to history, modern social life, or personal experience. The second example should be about fiction or other forms of art. Using an example, you need to explain how the information given in the example relates to the problem or question indicated in the essay. An example one body paragraph:

Often books help determine a goal in life – this is how the recently widowed Florence Green from the “Bookstore” risks everything by opening a bookstore in a seaside town to reveal to people what a treasury of human wisdom books. And the heroine of Markus Zusak risks not only freedom but also her life-saving literary masterpieces from the hands of the Nazis.

In this example, we have described that the book helps to determine the goal in life. We cited two actions of Florence Green and Markus Zusak as arguments. Our arguments are related. If you want to talk about other book benefits, you need to create a new paragraph. Otherwise, you can confuse the reader. Use the same principle to make the following paragraphs – with examples and evidence in favor of your ideas.

Step 5 – Writing a Conclusion

A conclusion is a part in which you can summarize the ideas of the central part, leading to the intended answer to a question or stated point of view. The final paragraph essay should:

  1. Match the thesis.
  2. Be concise, clear, and undeniable.
  3. Match the arguments.

It is forbidden to indicate new information in conclusion. You can end your essay with a call to action or a rhetorical question. An example of a successful conclusion:

Reading can be a common hobby, a passion, or it can help you set goals in life, become an interlocutor, or a cure for sadness. Florence Green and Markus Zusak, devoted to books with all their hearts, bear witness to this. Austin’s Elizabeth Bennet reads a lot and does not recognize other pleasures. Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye by Jerome Salinger enthusiastically reads books by various authors and considers the writers as his best friends. Therefore, I can confidently say that a book is more than a collection of pages. If you want to fill your mind with new insights – read the books!

Step 6 – Editing the Essay

After writing your essay:

  1. Read the text carefully and do essay proofreading.
  2. Eliminate stylistic, linguistic, punctuation, grammatical errors, and typos from the text.
  3. Whenever possible, have your friends or family read the essay to rate the text and provide guidelines for formatting.

In an essay, it is essential to use quotes and format them in the same style: MLA, APA, Chicago, Harvard. You can do this during editing when all quotes have already been allocated.

Essay Writing Tips: Success Secrets

Writing an essay is a tricky task, and to make it easier, you need to use the following tips:

  1. Write logically. If you start to argue about some idea, then do not jump to another topic. Your bright beginning must necessarily have a logical end. After you finish your essay, check if all the arguments and examples are consistent with the thesis.
  2. Stick to one style. It would help if you wrote the essay in a journalistic style that combines scientific and artistic techniques. Therefore, please do not overdo it with metaphors and epithets.
  3. Avoid common mistakes. Punctuation and spelling are essential, but many students forget about lexical and stylistic mistakes: tautology, the use of words in an unusual meaning or style.
  4. Quantity does not mean quality. An essay is assigned approximately 250-300 words. Exceeding this norm will not be an indicator of your erudition but will only lower your scores. Don’t waste time – keep it short but to the point. If you have a larger word limit, stick to it.
